Home Appliances

An appliance technician repairs and maintains a variety of home and commercial appliances such as refrigeration units, dishwashers, washing machines, ovens, cooktop stoves and microwave ovens. Training is offered through high school vocational or community college programs or may be provided by your employer. Manufacturing companies offer seminars to teach technicians how to repair and maintain new appliances and accessories.

Appliance Technician Training

Depending on the types of appliances you want to repair, education and training may include coursework at local colleges or vocational program or hands-on training through your employer. If you want to repair small appliances such as microwaves or small ovens, an apprenticeship and hands-on training may be all that is required of your employer. If you want to repair larger appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and dishwashers, additional training from manufacturers or vocational training combined with an apprenticeship may be necessary. Training seminars and day courses are frequently given in department stores or manufacturing plants to help technicians learn how to repair new appliance models. Increase your knowledge by reading appliance manuals, attending seminars and keeping up on the latest appliance trends.

Apprenticeship

As an apprentice, you will have exposure to many types of appliances. To become an appliance technician, you will have to learn how to read appliance schematics (drawings) and manuals, troubleshoot problems by making sure all wiring is connected and learning how to disassemble and reassemble an appliance when looking for internal issues. Apprenticeships include going to appointments with experienced technicians to learn customer service skills in addition to repair skills. An apprenticeship can last for a few months or up to a year or longer depending on your ability to learn and how well your employer thinks you are advancing.

Certification

While most employers do not require certification to become an appliance technician, if you are planning to specialize in refrigeration repair and maintenance, you will need to pass an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exam. This exam is offered by many vocational and college training programs or you can take it on your own. Other certification options are available through the International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET) or the Professional Service Association (PSA). These certifications test your knowledge of specific appliances as well as general knowledge of appliance repair. If looking for a position as a manager or supervisor within a larger appliance repair company, these certifications may increase your chances of being hired or promoted.

Modern consumer electronics have "instant on" features that require electricity even when the appliance is not on. This leaks energy and increases your electricity use. Energy Star rated large appliances like water heaters and furnaces for years before rating small appliances. This division of the U.S. Department of Energy now rates small appliances and consumer electronics, encouraging use of energy-efficient small appliances as well as major appliances. Energy Star televisions may save 75 percent of standby losses, reports the Department of Energy. Small appliances include everything from printers to baby monitors and coffee makers, but Energy Star does not rate all small appliances as of 2011.

Calculations

The U.S. Department of Energy operates several consumer websites to assist with decision making and evaluation of small appliances. The Energy Saver website explains how to estimate the energy consumption of small appliances by multiplying watts by hours of use a day divided by 1,000 for kilowatt-hours (kwh). Multiply by the number of days a year the appliance is used to calculate yearly consumption. Multiply by the price your electric company charges per kwh to calculate the annual cost.

Small Electronics Appliances

Energy Star rates small electronic appliances, including printers, copiers and computer monitors. Consumer electronics account for about 15 percent of home electricity use. Energy Star strives for 10 percent more efficiency in items that carry the label over those that are not Energy Star approved. Some items, like printers and monitors, may have a sleep mode when not in use. Use the Energy Star website to identify products by brand.

Small Appliances

Small appliances that create heat consume the most electricity. The vacuum cleaner, toaster oven, coffee maker, hair dryer and space heater are high-energy users. Small appliances that make a large difference include a coffee maker that you leave plugged in all day to keep the clock or timer functioning. The California Energy Commission shows that the coffee maker uses 128 kwh of electricity a year with only 30 minutes of use a day. Purchasing these small appliances with the Energy Star label when available will assure you of an energy-efficient appliance at the time of purchase. As the manufacturers produce more energy-efficient products, you may find that an older small appliance is not the most efficient model available.

More Energy Efficiency

Battery chargers and adapters consume energy with continuous plug-in. Unplug your cell phone charger and similar adapters when not in use. Power strips can make your small appliances more energy efficient if you do not want to unplug the cord after every use. Purchase power strips that have an "off" switch and turn off when not in use to save leaking energy from your small appliances. Use energy-efficient lighting and fans where available. This makes your energy-efficient small appliances even more energy efficient.

Small appliances simply plug into an outlet without the need of additional equipment or special connections. There are three types of ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCI) which include the GFI outlet, the portable GFI or the GFI circuit breaker. For small appliances, the only type of circuit breaker you need to install is the GFI outlet. Although it is not difficult to install, follow the instructions and testing exactly as intended in order to ensure it is working properly.

Instructions

1 Shut off the circuit you are installing the GFCI breaker on from the breaker box. If you do not have a breaker box but use a fuse box instead, remove the relative fuse completely.
2 Confirm the correct circuit is shut off by using a circuit tester. The circuit is still on when the tester is glowing, and you need to determine the correct circuit or fuse to turn off or remove.
3 Remove the existing receptacle plate and the receptacle itself by unscrewing the two screws on the plate and the screws that are securing the receptacle to the workbox.
4 Disconnect the wires from the receptacle, ensuring you know which two wires are running from the breaker box. If you only have two wires in addition to the ground wire, the outlet is at the end and those are the only two wires you need to pay attention to. However, if the outlet is not at the end of the wiring, you will have four wires in addition to two ground wires. If this is the case, turn the breaker on and test the wires to see which two are coming from the breaker box.
5 Attach the white and black (neutral and active) wires that are coming from the breaker box to the replacement GFCI outlet on the two "LINE" terminals. When you are connecting the wires, wrap each wire in a clockwise direction around the screw. Wrap the additional two wires (if you have them) to the other receptacles in a clockwise direction around the screw.
6 Attach the ground wire(s) to the GFCI outlet's grounding terminal.
7 Cover the screw heads on both sides by wrapping the GFCI outlet with electrical tape.
8 Insert the wires, bending them in a zigzag formation before placing them in the workbox and place the GFCI outlet into position. Tighten the screws to secure the outlet in its place, ensuring that the outlet is straight.
9 Screw on the new plate onto the receptacle and turn the breaker back on.
10 Test the outlet. To do this, press the "TEST" button followed by the "RESET" button and test the circuit with the circuit tester. If you installed the outlet in the middle of a series, you will need to test the other outlets on that series to ensure they are working.

Whenever you dry your hair, toast a bagel or turn on your computer, you are using electricity. Even when you sleep, your refrigerator, alarm clock and phone charger are still using energy. Calculating how much electricity your small appliances are using can be eye-opening, and it can help you save money by letting you know which appliances are costing you the most. It can also tell you if switching to a more energy efficient appliance would be an economical decision. The calculation for determining electric usage is a simple matter of multiplication.

Instructions

1 Find the wattage of the appliance. Check the big white tag on the cord of the appliance or the user manual for this number.
Some appliances may give volts and amps instead of wattage. In this case, calculate the wattage by multiplying the volts and the amps. If you have a toaster that uses 12 volts and 2 amps, you have a 24 watt toaster.
2 Estimate the number of hours per day, week or year that you use the appliance, depending on the time frame for which you want to determine the electric usage. You can also use "one hour" if you simply want to know how much energy your appliance uses per hour.
3 Multiply the wattage by the number of hours, then divide by 1000. Electric usage is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), and there are 1000 watts in a kilowatt, so you have to divide by 1000 to obtain the proper units.
To illustrate, if you use your 24 watt toaster for half an hour every day, your toaster uses ( 24 W x .5 H ) / 1000 = .012 kWh per day.

Classes last on average 3 to 10 weeks, and electronics classes are increasingly becoming an intrinsic component to the curriculum. Online classes are also available, though it may difficult to learn outside of a hands-on environment.

From on-the job training to school programs that can last up to 2 years, training options vary. Consider this example of how training can commence: An appliance technician course program at Texas State Technical College is 10 weeks, 35 to 40 hours a week, for $3,500. The core curriculum includes basic electronics, washers and dryers, air conditioning, heating and refrigeration. It may seem financially harsh to drop everything and only be a student for several weeks, paying thousands of dollars. However, the end result is likely to be worth it.

The department anticipates little or no change in employment of appliance technicians, and good opportunities are anticipated, especially with someone who has had formal training at an appliance repair school. The curriculum of coursework at MATC lays the foundation for a solid understanding of basic electronics, the typical hardware encountered in appliances (thermostats, switches, etc), and how to diagnose and correct appliance problems.
