Saving electricity in your home means helping the environment and your wallet. Purchasing energy efficient appliances are one way of saving on electrical costs, but small ways of cutting electricity can add up in a big way. Small appliances and electronics have ways of sucking energy even when not in use. Become aware of these energy hogs and you can stop them from raising your electrical bill.

Instructions

1 Unplug coffee pots, toasters and other counter appliances when not in use. Disconnect the computer printer when not in use. These appliances use small amounts of electricity in stand-by mode.
2 Change out traditional light bulbs for energy saving bulbs. Replace outdoor landscaping lights with solar powered lights. The solar lights absorb the sun's energy, giving off the light at night.
3 Wash clothes on the cold setting to save energy on heating up the water. Only wash when you have a full load. Set up a clothes line to dry clothes outdoors instead of the dryer, or dry clothes on a low heat setting.
4 Set a refrigerator out of direct sunlight and not right next to the oven. Defrost freezers when a 1/2- to 1-inch layer of frost appears. A frosted freezer requires more energy to run. Avoid putting hot dishes in the refrigerator; allow them to cool first so the refrigerator does not work harder to cool the dish.
5 Recharge your cell phone in the car with an adapter instead of using the electricity from the home. Unplug game consoles when not in use.
