Home Appliances

Unlike major appliances that are typically fixtures that can't be moved easily, small appliances refer to a class of appliances that are portable or semi-portable. While some are used handheld, most of them are used on tabletops, countertops and other platforms. Small appliances are usually powered by electricity. Others are gas-powered or battery-powered. Every type of appliance is designed to enable or assist in performing a specific function, improve a situation or provide entertainment to the user.

Kitchen Appliances

Countertop kitchen appliances are portable items designed to cook food or assist in its preparation. Portable cooking stoves, toaster ovens, microwave ovens, countertop grills, rice cookers, steamers, electric kettles, deep fryers, electric frying pans, woks and crock pots are small kitchen appliances used to heat or cook food. Juicers, blenders and coffeemakers are countertop or handheld tools used to extract drinks, prepare refreshments or make hot beverages. Food scales, electric can openers, electric knives and mini choppers assist in food preparation. Breadmakers, popcorn makers, sandwich makers, waffle makers, ice cream makers and pasta makers create specific types of food or are used for preparation of cooking specific dishes.

Cleaning and Home Improvement Appliances

Handy and portable cleaning appliances including vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners and car vacuums help maintain the cleanliness of the home. Others such as steam irons, vapor steam cleaners, air purifiers, humidifiers and fans are home improvement appliances that provide convenience to users. Some appliances improve the environment or provide ease in accomplishing tasks, such as air ionizers, insect-repellent devices, electronic soap or toothpaste dispensers and sewing machines.

Entertainment Appliances

Entertainment appliances are electronic gadgets used for fun and enjoyment. While there are many entertainment appliances that are used as permanent or semi-permanent fixtures, a number of smaller ones are typically seen inside homes, such as electronic toys and musical instruments, electronic media devices and gaming gadgets. Examples include: portable televisions, portable DVD, CD and Blu-ray players, VCRs, synthesizers, laptops, camcorders, still cameras, video game consoles, portable media players, sound recorders and digital alarm clocks.

Communication and Office Appliances

Communication and office appliances provide interactional, productivity, security and safety functions. Some may also be devices which are integral to business, serving the audio-visual needs during meetings and presentations. Major portable or semi-portable communication and office appliances include telephones, answering and fax machines, security cameras, paper shredders, copiers, printers, electronic bundy clocks, scanners, slide projectors and metal detectors.
